Arcanum 17 + 2

Reidemeister Move - Robin Hayward – microtonal tuba and Christopher Williams – double bass
Lukas Pearse - bass
Norman Adams - cello
Berlin is a fertile breeding ground for art, attracting and producing a certain breed of fearless artist. It is this environment that attracted American bassist Christopher Williams, and English tubist Robin Hayward to live, work and to form Reidemeister Move. I was drawn to this duo because I want to give a little taste of what Berlin is like, how artists there think and what they feel compelled to explore. This concert will feature a performance of Williams’ Arcanum 17, a duo for bass, tuba and multiple speaker array. For the second set of this special concert Robin and Christopher will collaborate with Lukas Pearse and myself to explore the low and long! - Norman Adams
Rimouski
November 12, 2012 | 8pmThe Bus Stop Theatre, 2203 Gottingen Street
$20/$10
Eric Normand - electric bass
Rémy Bélanger de Beauport - cello
Norman Adams - cello
Arthur Bull – guitar
“I always refer to Rimouski, Quebec as an oasis of improvised music. This is untrue of course, as it is in Quebec, which is far from being an oasis of any kind of art! If anything, it is an oasis of new music in a similar way to Halifax: Rimouski is a small city; and like Halifax it is relatively isolated from major centres, while still being home to a surprising number of musicians making exploratory music, and an active scene of concerts that brings international and national artists to town on a regular basis. Through this shared isolation and similar high levels of activity, some great cooperation between our two towns has been growing. This season suddenlyLISTEN and Tour de Bras of Rimouski, will celebrate this relationship, by presenting concerts in both Rimouski and Halifax. This concert will be an assemblage of string players, and of leading concert organizers playing music from the edges of Canada, but the centre of two vibrant cultural communities.” - Norman Adams
Joëlle
December 11, 2012 | 8pmThe Bus Stop Theatre, 2203 Gottingen Street
$20/$10
Joëlle Léandre – contrabass
Norman Adams - cello
Derek Charke - flute
D’Arcy Gray – percussion
“suddenlyLISTEN has been fortunate to be able to work with, and present the music of some of the pioneers of creative music: Pauline Oliveros, Eddie Prevost, Evan Parker and Jerry Granelli are some of the legendary artists we have hosted and collaborated with over the years. French bassist Joëlle Léandre is one of those unique artistic voices that has changed music, through her virtuoso musicianship, powerful personality and profound tenacity. We are honoured to have her in Halifax! Juno Award winning composer, and flutist Derek Charke will join Joëlle, me and D’Arcy for this concert. This will be music played with fire, just the way Joëlle likes it!” - Norman Adams
Siren Song
March 10, 2013 | 8 pmThe Bus Stop Theatre, 2203 Gottingen Street
$20/$10
Tena Palmer – voice
Zokugaku – Tim Crofts – keyboard/processing
Geordie Haley – guitar/processing
Doug Cameron – drums
“I will be away on an extended trip to Europe in the winter of 2013, so I have enlisted suddenlyLISTEN Associate Artist, and workshop leader, Tim Crofts to curate the season’s final concert. I was overjoyed when Tim proposed his electro band Zokugaku with guest vocalist Tena Palmer. I’m a big fan of Zokugaku’s aggressive, improv (almost) rock sound. It’s loud, but not always; grooving, but still unpredictable. It’s solid music from Halifax’s most versatile and exciting musicians. Tena has one of the most malleable and expressive voices I have ever heard, and her ability to easily pass from melody to noise and back, make her a perfect match to Zokugaku’s 180 degree wide dynamic range!” - Norman Adams
